Two workers of Shell Petroleum Development Company have been kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Rivers state.
The identities of the abducted workers have not been released.
The gunmen reportedly killed the guards of the workers. The Shell officials, it was learnt, were returning from a business trip when their abductors struck on Thursday.
Speaking with TheCable on Saturday morning, Nnamdi Omoni, Rivers police spokesman, while confirming the incident, said they were working to ensure that they are released soon.
“That is confirmed,” Omoni said.
“They have been kidnapped and we are working assiduously to ensure that they are released in record time.”
The oil company said the incident happened at Rumuji in Rivers.
“The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) regrets to confirm the attack on its staff and government security escort at Rumuji, Rivers State, on the East/West road,” a Shell official said.
The development is coming six days after Faye Mooney, an official of Mercy Corps Nigeria, and Matthew Oguche, her partner, were killed in Kajuru local government area of Kaduna.
The duo were caught in a crossfire between police officers guarding the resort they were in and suspected bandits.
