Oil spill: Shell to begin remediation in Aghoro, Odimodi

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) says it will immediately begin remediation of areas by oil spills in Aghoro and Odimodi, communities in Bayelsa and Delta respectively.

According to a statement by the company, 95% of the spilt oil was recovered.

“As soon as clean-up and site assessment are completed, we are committed to starting the immediate remediation of the impacted areas in Aghoro and Odimodi,” the statement read.

On April 24, SPDC shut down production on the Trans Ramos Pipeline (TRP) after it discovered four leak points on the 24-inch pipeline.

A joint investigation visits (JIV) team comprising of security and regulatory agencies, community representatives and SPDC staff were constituted and deployed to the spill site.

Bamidele Odugbesan, SPDC spokesman, told TheCable Petrobarometer that JIV report will be published on its website once signed off by the team.

“The JIV is completed. The field work is completed. We are waiting for all the parties to sign. All the parties must sign and they must all come to an agreement on the findings,” he said.

“As soon as that is done, then the JIV will be out. The report will be published on our website.”

On re-opening the Trans Ramos Pipeline, the spokesman said repairs are ongoing and no definite timeline can be given.
