The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says it will build more depots for petroleum products across the country.
Maikanti Baru, the group managing director, said this in Abuja on Monday while inaugurating the board of NNPC Retail Limited, one of its downstream companies.
NNPC currently has 23 depots across the country, but most of them are down owing to poor maintenance.
Thousands of trucks are forced to travel long distances to load petroleum products, most of them travelling from the far north to south-west Nigeria.
With the corporation failing to maintain the depots it currently has, questions are going to be asked about the capability to manage the news ones in its plans.
Barum, however, said adding news depots to the existing 23 nationwide would ease products supply and distribution in the country.
He asked members of the board to expand the company’s market share from 13 to 30 per cent, proposing that building more depots was more feasible than acquiring dormant ones.
